DJ Construction began construction on the Bethel University Athletic and Training Facility project on their Mishawaka campus in Spring 2020.
The facility was engineered to provide training space and equipment primarily for Bethel’s national champion track and field teams.
One of the main additions to the long, narrow building is an indoor track. The track will stretch 200 meters but will not be a full circle. It will be utilized for track and field practices, but not for competitions. For most of its history, the track and field program has not had an adequate practice area. The training center will also contain a weight room area with squat racks, lifting platforms, a dumbbell rack, multi-function benches, areas for pole vaulting, shot put and discus practice, as well as exercise space for use by all athletes.
The most exciting part of this building is the opportunities it creates for students. For years previously, Bethel students have had to train in unconventional ways. Pole vaulters had to practice on the basketball court in Gates Gymnasium, and sprinters worked with a makeshift straightaway in the basement of a residence hall. Athletic Director Tony Natali states, “We’ve embraced these challenges as a way to build team spirit, and now we will move into a new era of having facilities designed for our athletes. We’re excited to see what the future holds.”
