Sugar Grove Church Expands Campus
28 acres are being developed to meet growth demands.

GOSHEN: Seven years ago, Sugar Grove Church stood at a crossroads. Attendance was in decline, yet a contingent of churchgoers held resolutely to the belief that God had something special in store for the church.
They chose to stand firm in their vision of being a source of hope for the Elkhart community; they also hired Rick Gering as their new lead pastor.
Today, attendees are witnessing the fulfillment of those long-held convictions. With their building having exceeded its seating capacity, more worship services have been added and they are in the process of expanding their facility.
“God has blessed this church with 28 acres of land for the harvesting of, not corn, but souls,” said Gering. “Sugar Grove Church has a long range plan for these 28 acres to become a campus for our community.”
According to Enos Yoder, Certified Church Consultant at DJ Construction, the builder for the project, “Sugar Grove has grown from a church with an average attendance of 425 just five years ago when the existing facility was renovated, to over 900 in attendance today. They also have increased their weekend services to five. With more families in attendance, the children’s area also has grown, and the youth ministry has exploded from 40 to 140 students. The challenge, then, is to expand the facility in applicable ways to accommodate the growth.”
The priorities of the plan, according to DJ’s pre-construction project manager Pat Gross, are to provide a new multi-purpose worship center with seating for up to 500, doubling their current capacity; add restrooms; expand the nursery and children’s area with improved safety and security; create a new entrance on the south side of the building; and increase parking space.
With dirt already moving, Gering assures the well-attended summer Vacation Bible School June 23-June 27 will be unaffected by the project. The church’s “Celebration Sunday” activities at the end of June also will also go on.
DJ Project Manager Adam Tohulka adds that steel should start going up in July, on target for the new worship space to be used early in 2015.
The lead pastor concludes with these thoughts: “Sugar Grove Church is truly blessed to be strategically located in Elkhart County. God has taken us from a small country church that has stayed true to the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a beacon of hope that is reaching the Elkhart County community.
“Hope is our message.”
