The Ice Box in South Bend has felt the effects of that growth, as the non-profit corporation recently called on DJ Construction’s Service Group, under Robb Huber’s guidance, to provide an expansion and renovation to their building.

This project comes after an autumn 2014 renovation of the Ice Box’s locker rooms. DJ replaced walls and floors with new, attractive finishes to the 1973–built area. Mike Klute, owner of the Ice Box, said the transformation is a “huge difference between what was there and what Corbie created.” Corbie Garber from DJ Construction oversaw the renovation.

This newer project is a 1,339 sq. ft. two-story steel building addition that provides office space, a conference room, and much-needed storage on the second floor. An acoustical ceiling will be installed on the first floor to absorb sound.

According to the Ice Box’s website, organized youth hockey came to South Bend in 1968 with the opening of the Notre Dame Athletic and Convocation Center. In 1975, the program grew so large that a second ice rink in South Bend opened on the city’s west side. It was named the Ice Box.

In 1981, a non-profit corporation called South Bend Youth Hockey, Inc., was created for the purpose of operating the Ice Box. In 1999, with the continued growth of youth, high school, and senior leagues, along with the potential for increased figure skating and public skating usage, the Ice Box added a second rink with accompanying facilities.

Today, the Ice Box is accommodating requests for additional hockey team practice times, more figure skating, public skating opportunities, and requests for regional tournaments and competitions. The facility is open year-round.

DJ Construction is proud to be part of the hockey landscape at the Ice Box by participating in these renovations.
