The one bedroom or efficiency style apartment complex includes a community room and laundry facilities for the tenants. Occupants also have access to support services as a resource for successful tenancy.

Eight of the 16 apartments are currently being rented.

Alan Greaser, Vice-President of Asset Management for LaCasa, said the apartments are part of the Permanent Supportive Housing program that assists homeless individuals, providing a safe, affordable place to live.

“Housing is a key building block for individuals to become integrated into the community,” he said.

“This project completes the third phase of a partnership with Oaklawn, Inc., that has added 34 apartments for persons who had been previously homeless in Elkhart County. Phase 1 and 2 have been extremely successful.

LaCasa is grateful for the community support and opportunity to dramatically reduce the incidents of homelessness and make this resource available in our community,” said Greaser.

According to Adam Tohulka of DJ Construction, many green components were incorporated into the construction, allowing DJ to garner “National Green Building Standard” certification through the National Association of Home Builders. These green components include energy star appliances, energy efficient windows, extra insulation, geothermal mechanicals, landscaping that requires little irrigation, and construction waste recycling.
