Hawks Arts and Enterprise Center Groundbreaking Set
Goshen – April 2, 2014 – After years of dreaming and countless hours of discussion on development of the Hawks building along Goshen’s historic Millrace canal, the project officially has begun.
On April 17 at 11:00 a.m. LaCasa, Inc. and DJ Construction will co-host a groundbreaking ceremony at the building site, 215 W. Madison St. in Goshen, Indiana. The public is invited to attend.
LaCasa, Inc. has contracted with DJ Construction Company, Inc. for the redevelopment of the building into 35 one and two bedroom live/work apartments for artists and entrepreneurs. Other partners in the project are the City of Goshen, Ratio Architecture, Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, Great Lakes Capital, NeighborWorks America, Neighborhood Development Associates and Lake City Bank.
Brad Hunsberger, Vice President of Real Estate Development at LaCasa said, “The groundbreaking represents the culmination of years of planning and the renaissance of this building that has been important to Goshen’s history. This project, in conjunction with the other development planned along the Millrace Canal, begins the rebuilding of a fully revitalized historic corridor adjacent to Goshen’s downtown.”
Bob Schrock, owner and CEO at DJ Construction, said his team is excited to break ground after evaluating possibilities on the Hawks site for a decade.
“We are glad that LaCasa was able to make this happen and look forward to continuing our relationship with them. Our long history in the community only adds to our commitment to making this another successful project for Goshen,” he said.
Larry Gautsche, President of LaCasa, Inc. said the following: “The Hawks Arts and Enterprise Center is a unique development designed to accomplish multiple outcomes. Renovation of the building preserves an example of Goshen’s history, the remaining example of the factory buildings that once lined the hydraulic canal. It is also the first significant investment in the Goshen Redevelopment Commission’s ambitious master plan to bring new life to an under-utilized brown field. A first for the State of Indiana, this development uses affordable housing funds to create a residential community for artists and entrepreneurs.
“Our community needs more economic diversity but has lacked incentives for small business. I’m very pleased that LaCasa has been able to bring together the resources to make this opportunity possible. We hope that this affordable live/work residential community will help retain college graduates and encourage artists and entrepreneurs to pursue their careers and build their businesses in our community.”
After the groundbreaking, opportunities will be available to take tours of the accessible portions of the building. The unique loft style apartments will be completed and available April, 2015.
